But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.  1 Peter 3: 14-16

We condemn network news media as false & fabricated and then cite it as a reliable source to make a point; we condemn the use of social media by monitoring and using social media. We indict those who court attention and we court attention to bring attention to those who court attention.

We grumble and complain about the people who grumble and complain. We gossip about people because we don’t like people who gossip. We hate politics and can’t stand politicians so we look for a new politician to fix what the old ones couldn’t do and then discuss politics exhaustively. We are ‘victims’ of society but get angry by when we are treated like a ‘victim’. We hate racism so we justify our racism toward those being racist.

We totally justify slander because we were slandered. We are critical of others because they are critical of us. We want to go to church but not fellowship with the church. We love God’s advice but we take our own advice. We want to be like Jesus but we do not want to suffer like Jesus. We want to grow spiritually but we don’t want to cultivate our own spiritual garden. We ‘like’ Christians only if they are ‘like’ us.

We read the bible to fix other people and not commune with God. We listen to sermons and think of somebody else’s sin. We preach repentance but haven’t mourned or wept over own sin. We are suspicious of someone’s alcohol use but our overeating is acceptable. We are no longer hedonists that could be considered gross or immoral all of our sin now is ‘tolerable and respectable’.

We rebuke people from our kitchen tables but hardly, if ever, speak directly to those people and don’t even rebuke people in our own household. We’ve decided whether or not we like someone but we’ve never spent any time with them, ever. We use secondary information as primary information. We are experts in everything and doers of nothing.

We inflate our resume to so that we can score a job that requires little to no work. We want to be respected and will disrespect someone to achieve that. Everyone is a lost cause but we are fine. Gods sovereign hand in my life is working fine but obviously He is failing in that person’s life. We will only love better if we are loved better. We want people to be genuine and honest but not be truthful. We don’t want to be judged so we judge the people who judge us. We are too lazy to help people who struggle with laziness.

We want microwavable relationships because we don’t have time. We don’t have time but Netflix shatters that assertion. We don’t return phone calls because we don’t use our phone but we are on phone all day. Everyone’s kids are annoying but ours are blissful. We are smart and everyone else is a complete idiot. We are wise and they are foolish as if the virtue & wisdom you have is from you and not from God. We are ‘not prideful’ and yet insulted at the fact someone calls us prideful.

We are consistently inconsistent and absolutely stained by our sin.

Thanks be to God of Holy Scripture who saves for no other reason than His own pleasure in sovereign election (Romans 9:15-29). I’m grateful that God is nothing like us at all. (Isaiah 46:9-13)
